What Is Organic Green Tea?

Organic green tea is Camellia sinensis grown under certified organic rules and processed without full oxidation: leaves are withered, heated to fix enzymes, rolled and dried. The result is greener leaf and a paler, fresher liquor than black tea, with naturally occurring polyphenols preserved in the style typical of the origin.

Our organic greens are all Ceylon (Sri Lankan) teas from Idalgashinna in Uva—grades include OP (Orange Pekoe), OP1 and BOP1 (Broken Orange Pekoe), which describe leaf size and appearance, not flavour alone.

Ceylon Organic Green vs Other Greens

Japanese greens are often steamed; many Chinese greens are pan-fired. Ceylon organic green tea from high Uva gardens tends toward bright, clean aromatics rather than heavy umami or smoke. Brew with cooler water and respect shorter steeps to avoid bitterness.

How to Brew Organic Green Tea

  • Water at 75–85°C (let boiled water cool 2–3 minutes).
  • Steep 2–3 minutes for the first infusion.
  • About one teaspoon loose leaf or one pyramid bag per cup.
  • Reinfuse good leaf once if desired; increase temperature slightly and shorten time.
  • Best enjoyed plain; Organic Jasmine is excellent hot or chilled.

Organic Green Tea FAQs

Organic green tea is Camellia sinensis that is withered, heat-fixed (to stop oxidation), rolled and dried under certified organic standards. It keeps a lighter colour and fresher, more vegetal or floral cup than black tea.

They are Sri Lankan leaf grades. OP (Orange Pekoe) is long wiry leaf; OP1 is a finer OP style; BOP1 is broken leaf with good tip content that brews quickly while staying flavourful. All three in our range are organic Uva greens from Idalgashinna.

Processing and cultivars differ. Ceylon greens are often brighter and more aromatic in the Uva style—less grassy than many Japanese senchas, and distinct from pan-fired Chinese greens. Brewing cooler and shorter suits all styles.

Yes, but usually less per cup than black tea if you use similar leaf weight and a shorter steep. Caffeine varies by grade and brew time.

Use water at about 75–85°C (not rolling boil). Steep 2–3 minutes for the first cup; many leaves can be reinfused once with slightly hotter water and a shorter time.

All four organic greens here are from Idalgashinna bio-organic estate, Haputale, in Sri Lanka’s Uva highlands.
